University Ramblings

I've neglected this blog for far too long, so I thought it was about time I returned with a new post. I'm currently on a gap year, a totally unplanned, unorganised and adventure lacking gap year. The reason for this is because when I was choosing my universities and my courses my school didn't encourage me to look at more hands on, industry focused courses, or courses that weren't one of my three subjects, or courses that weren't at top class universities. This inevitably meant that by the time results day had reached me I'd had numerous doubts about whether I actually wanted to do the course I'd selected, because I'd only chosen Classics as I liked it most out of my three A Levels. On results day I spent 4 hours on the phone to pull out of the place I had been given and decided to take a year out to find a course that I really wanted to do. After a bit of looking around I found a course in Media and Communications (Music Industry) and other Media and Communications degrees which I am now just about to apply to.

Really I am writing this blog post to encourage anyone reading to find a course that they really want to do, no matter what it is, and go for it. I've faced multiple criticisms and comments from my family and other people about my decision to go for a less academic course, but at the end of the day enjoying what you study is the most important thing. If you pick a random course that you think looks good, the chances are that you won't enjoy it, you won't want to do the work and you will end up not getting the kind of grades that you're capable of. Also I'd like to point out that finding the right university is important. Don't let people tell you that you can't go somewhere because it's not Oxford or Cambridge. In my opinion there is nothing worse than university snobbery. Different universities have different strengths. Find somewhere you like being, if you like loud and energetic scenes go for a university in a big city.

Don't worry about what people think now. I want to make music part of my future, so I'm going to. If you really want to do something you'll be able to make it work.

"It's not right for you, if you even have to think about it"

*PS I've been out to gigs and listening to new music and applying for short courses that I'll be posting about soon. I haven't been doing much playing but I did pick my flute up the other day just to make sure that I can still play it
